It has always troubled me that when documentary filmmakers work with parading communities participants are always cornered and asked to explain themselves through a spoken interview. It never plays out in the bandsman’s favour. How do you manage to articulate other aspects of the bands identity without recording voices and beyond recording music? The artwork I’ve made is an attempt to articulate something about this groups collective identity through an exploration of the tattoos many of the bandsmen have.
