…I kept returning to the flagpole, obsessing on the potential as a curatorial space. I started to imagine the flagpole as the key, an opportunity to signal the identity of the building, a curatorial marker extending the geographic range of 25 Rokeby St through the commissioning of artists flags. We imagined that by commissioning and making artists flags and then flying them above John Wardle Architects, we could connect the two spaces, even connect the practice and production of art and architecture!
Stewart Russell, reflecting on the ongoing ‘On Top of the World’ commission
On 20th February 2024 we gathered on the rooftop terrace to launch a new flag, working with Stewart Russell of Spacecraft and John Wardle. The flag was constructed from an image of a bookshelf, the spines become skyscrapers against a blue background. After the toast we move inside and conduct a literary derive through the city of Glasgow, using books illustrated in the flag to navigate that city’s psychic geography.
